New Year’s Resolutions of a Feminist
As 2015 approaches, I encourage you to take a vow to support women around you and play a role in empowering yourself and others. Pick one or more from the following or make your own feminist resolutions for this coming year! No pressure.
  1. Pay attention. Be more mindful of how women are presented in the media, politics, your workplace, family and your extended social circle. Be more critical of these presentations rather than taking them as “just the way things are.”
  2.  Speak up. Whenever you feel like you or someone else is being put at a disadvantage merely due to gender, say something!
  3. Be an ally. Not just to women, but to other members of the society who are being discriminated against. Unity is strength.
  4. Be positive. Look for positivity all around you – in yourself, other women, other men and anybody and everybody.
  5. Support women products. Make a conscious effort to buy products from struggling women entrepreneurs and fuel their creativity. Women can only be empowered if we empower them.
  6. Stay healthy. Take care of your physical, mental, spiritual, social as well as sexual health. Engage in safe relationships which are healthy for you and people around you.
  7.  Feel confident. Move out of weight-shaming and other negative body image issues. Stop relying on the media and magazines to tell you what you should look like. The only acceptable definition of beauty is health.
I hope the coming year brings lots of joys and success for you all. We wish you a very happy new year on behalf of the Women Empowerment Club at York University!
