WEC Women’s Conference 2014 – What it is and why you should attend!

Hey Yorkies!

I truly hope the holidays have been swell for you and have recharged your batteries adequately for the Winter semester. January is one of my favorite months in the school year for three very importants reasons. First of all, you are very likely to find students, faculty and staff in a very jolly mood from the holidays and new years fun. This just means there is going to be some super positive energy on campus! Secondly, professors haven’t unleashed dragons of essays, evaluations, and tests yet (that’s all for February and March, heh). Thirdly,  it also happens to be the month where one of the most inspiring, riveting and empowering conferences are taking place on our very own  campus! (EXCITING!!). The Women Empowerment Club will be holding their second annual Women Empowerment Conference on January 18th 2014 from 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM in the TEL Building on Keele campus.

The theme for the conference this year is centered around bridging communities and thus the workshops at the conference will focus on different issues. Some examples of issues which will be tackled are: Major issues girls and women face in developing countries (The Girl Issue Workshop), Barriers women face in the business industry (Breaking Down Barriers Workshop), The meaning of masculinity and taking a closer look at gender-based violence (Unpacking the Man Box) . There will be five workshops in total and delegates will have the choice of attending three (based on their interests, etc.). Can you believe I haven’t even gotten to the most exciting news yet? That’s right, there’s more!

The keynote speakers for this conference are..drumroll please… Rosannagh Maclennan who happens to be a Olympic Gold Medalist from the  London 2012 Olympics and Karen Stintz who is a Ward 16 City Councillor and TTC Chair (she’s also running for mayor!). AKA, There will be some very powerful women on campus on Saturday January 18th 2014, who will be there for the sole purpose of empowering YOU!

If you’re panicking that it’s too late to buy your tickets, HAVE NO FEAR! There is still plenty of time! Tickets will be sold $10 to York students and $15 to non-York students (and yes, lunch will be provided). Tickets  will be available for purchase in Central Square from Monday, January 6, 2014 to Friday, January 17, 2014 each day from 10:00am-4:00pm. Alternatively, You can also buy them online here: http://www.eventbrite.ca/e/wec-2nd-annual-womens-conference-building-bridges-in-our-communities-registration-9369030021.
